Zephyr Teachout, a left wing zealot and self-styled anti-corruption crusader congressional candidate, has challenged Paul Singer and Robert Mercer to a debate. Sounds normal for a person who is seeking a high-level elected office – that is if Singer and Mercer were her opponents. But they’re not.
John Faso, an attorney and former New York state assemblyman, is the Republican running against Teachout for New York’s 19th District congressional seat. Singer and Mercer are donors to a super PAC, New York wins PAC, which is favorable to Faso. They have donated quite a bit of money to the PAC; between the two of them, they have emptied over one million dollars into it.
Teachout wants to debate them to obtain an explanation as to why these wealthy men have so heavily funded the pro-Faso pack. Apparently, the obvious answer – that they like Faso – isn’t sufficient for the sometimes-law teacher Teachout. So, perhaps she might surmise that they are adversarial to her looney liberal positions, such as a reversal on tax cuts, higher minimum wage, and the provision of in-state college tuition and driver’s licenses to illegal immigrants.
Challenging donors of an opponent’s PAC to a debate is silly and juvenile. And if Teachout truly thinks this is a valuable activity, then she should counsel Hillary Clinton to proffer up her endless list of PAC donors (especially those from Arabic countries who have lobbed hundreds of millions her way) to Trump, so he can debate them. Let’s see how quickly that happens.
