GUN VIOLENCE AWARENESS MONTH LAUNCHES

Council Member Jumaane D. Williams (D-Brooklyn), Deputy Leader and Chair of the Council’s Housing and Buildings Committee, NYC Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito, Public Advocate Letitia James, Comptroller Scott M. Stringer, Chair of the Committee on Public Safety Vanessa L. Gibson, and Chair of the Committee on Women’s Issues Laurie Cumbo, Program Director for the Mayor’s Office of Criminal Justice anti-violence initiatives Eric Cumberbatch, join anti-gun violence advocates and a coalition of cure violence and intervention groups led by Erica Ford, founder of LIFE Camp, anti-violence advocate Tamika Mallory, and A.T. Mitchell, founder of Man Up Inc., and Shanduke Mcphatter, founder of G-MACC Inc. to launch Gun Violence Awareness Month.

In 2013 New York State made history by becoming the first state in the country to designate an entire month to the issue of gun violence. Gun Violence Awareness Month was created in an effort to raise awareness surrounding the issue of needless and senseless gun violence in New York’s communities.
