Hempstead Town Supervisor Anthony Santino joined the seniors in welcoming students from Rosemary Kennedy School in Wantagh who brought gifts of plant and vegetable seedlings for their senior friends. Also joining them were Councilman Gary Hudes and Councilwoman Eric King Sweeney.
“Spring is in the air in Hempstead Town and planting vegetables is a great way for our seniors to welcome the warmer weather and get some exercise,” said Supervisor Santino. “Our Senior Centers offer mature residents a host of activities daily, and I’m sure they are very eager to get digging!”
Gardening can offer an increase in mobility and flexibility, something which can help older adults maintain their independence. It also helps ease stress and anxiety. A study performed by researchers at Leiden University and Wageningen University and Research Center pointed out that as little as 30 minutes of gardening decreased the stress hormone cortisol and restored study participants’ mood.
“I applaud the Rosemary Kennedy students for their kindness in bringing our Bellmore seniors plants and vegetables to grow in their garden,” said Councilman Hudes.
“On behalf of the Bellmore Senior Center, I would like to express our gratitude for the students’ visit and for their thoughtful gifts,” concluded Councilwoman King Sweeney.
