URBAN UPBOUND CELEBRATE SUCCESSFUL FOURTH YEAR OF FREE TAX PREPARATION

By RYAN WICKER

Assemblyman Ron Kim (D – 40th District) held a private appreciation luncheon on April 16, 2016 with Urban Unbound to announce another successful year of free tax services. The Assembly Member’s Flushing office partnered with the community organization for a fourth straight year to provide free tax preparation services for the 2016 tax season.

Founded in 2005, Urban Upbound is a community organization dedicated to tackling poverty in working-class, low-income neighborhoods, and to providing resources to further economic mobility. To that end, it offers many important services and programs, including financial counseling, college preparation, career development services and The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program.

This is the fourth year in a row that a VITA site was established at Assemblyman Kim’s district office This year, the site’s program started its services on January 26th and ended on April 16th with the closing of tax season. Services were provided every Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm.

Assemblyman Kim’s partnership with Urban Upbound’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program helped New York residents file over 1,300 tax returns with over $1.2 million in total tax refund claims. The partnership has also helped put over $450,000 back into the pockets of working families through the Earned Income Tax Credit – real money that makes a difference in a recovering economy.

Assemblyman Ron Kim stated, “In the last four years, we brought back more than $4 million to our constituents in total tax refund claims. For many of these families and individuals, they may not have had the opportunity to claim these returns if we did not provide free tax services. I’m grateful for the partnership with Urban Upbound and I hope to continue to work together in empowering all vulnerable workers with financial literacy programs.”

Dave Miller, CFO at Urban Upbound stated, “Urban Upbound provides essential services to many New Yorkers, including Tax Preparation, Financial Counseling, Banking, Employment Services and College Access. We are very thankful that Assemblyman Kim has continued our partnership in providing free Tax Preparation Services, and hope to expand on further initiatives with his office in the near future.”

This year the program started its services on January 26th and ended on April 16th with the closing of tax season. Services were provided every Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm.
