Governor Cuomo signed the Mental Health Tax Check Off bill today, making it officially a New York State law.
The bill was approved by the state senate in June of 2015 and has been pending approval from the governor himself. What the new law entails is essentially a new tax write-off. For a long time, donations made to research on illnesses like Breast Cancer and Alzheimers have been tax-write offs. Until today, in New York State, donations made towards Depression, Bi-polar disorder and the like have not been.
The new law aims not only to raise money for these important mental health issues, but also do aid in ending the stigma surrounding mental illness.
