Gay group to march in St. Pat’s parade

NEW YORK – Organizers of the annual Saint Patricks Day Parade in midtown Manhattan have eased their longstanding policy of not permitting gay organizations to march in the March 17th parade, always a huge event.

Out@NBCUniversal, a group of openly gay employees at NBC, will march in the parade next year.

Cardinal Timothy Dolan issued a statement following the announcement.

“The Saint Patrick’s Day Parade Committee continues to have my confidence and support,” Cardinal Dolan said.  “Neither my predecessors as Archbishop of New York nor I have ever determined who would or would not march in this parade (or any of the other parades that march along Fifth Avenue, for that matter), but have always appreciated the cooperation of parade organizers in keeping the parade close to its Catholic heritage.”

Mayor Bill de Blasio, who boycotted the parade this year, said the move is a “step forward”.
