Partially developed fetus found on Lake Erie shore

PORTLAND – At the request of the New York State Police, the Erie County Medical Examiner's Office performed an examination on human remains found on the Lake Erie shoreline in the Town of Portland, Chautauqua County, on Thursday.

The examination revealed the remains are of a human fetus. The fetus was found intact and has been determined to have a gestational age of approximately 18 to 20 weeks, and appears to have been separated from the mother for approximately two to three weeks. The Erie County Medical Examiner's Office issued a Fatality Certificate which lists the cause to be Intrauterine Fetal Demise.
The State Police has contacted the Chautauqua County District Attorney's Office of its findings, and is continuing the investigation in order to locate the mother and to determine the circumstances surrounding this matter.
