Police investigate suspicious device at Thruway rest area

ULSTER – State Police shut down the Ulster Service Area on the southbound Thruway late Friday morning when they received a report of a suspicious device found in the Sunoco Mart there.

The device appeared to be incendiary when first observed, police said. The area was evacuated as the State Police Bomb Disposal Unit and Bureau of Criminal Investigation responded.

An examination of the item by the bomb squad revealed it to be fake and inert. It was safely removed from the scene and surrounding buildings and grounds were searched for additional threats. None were found and the service area was re-opened.

The investigation is continuing.
