Child dead in Catskills bungalow fire

LIBERTY – Fire at a summer bungalow colony on Route 55 in Liberty has claimed the life of a small child.

The blaze, which was called in around 10:15 p.m., destroyed one building with a three-year-child found dead inside the structure.  Authorities said sparks from a small fan may have started the fire, which consumered the residence.

According to officials, a mother heard crackling, saw the flames and evacuated with other children, but was unable to rescue the victim.

The two-alarm fire was investigated by the State Police with a county fire investigator also at the scene.
