New commandant takes over at USMA

WEST POINT – Brig. Gen. John Thomson III has assumed command as the 75th Commandant of Cadets at the US Military Academy on Monday.

Thomson, a 1986 graduate of West Point, is from Tyler, Texas. He holds a Master of Science degree in counseling and leader development from Long Island University.  His military education includes the German Army’s Tactical Warfighting Course, the Combined Armed Services and Staff School, the US Army Command and General Staff College, the Joint and Combined Warfighting School of the Joint Forces Staff College, and the US Army War College Fellowship program at the Institute of World Politics in Washington, DC.

Thomson has commanded at every level from company through division.

Other assignments include 6th Battalion, 41st Field Artillery in Kitzingen, Germany, 2nd Armored Calvary Regiment in Nuremburg, Germany, tactical officer for the US Corps of Cadets at West Point, 4th Infantry Division (M) at Fort Hood Texas, 2nd Battalion, 4th Field Artillery of the 214th Field Artillery Brigade at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, executive officer to the Commanding General of Multi-National Corps, Iraq.

He most recently served as deputy commander for the 4th Infantry Division at Fort Carson, Colorado.
