Man arrested in Monticello killing

MONTICELLO – Village Police arrested a suspect in connection with the early Thursday morning shooting death of Shereem Samuel Burch, 33, of Monticello.

An investigation by Monticello and State Police identified Yaya Robinson, 28, of Monticello as the shooter.

“We were able relatively early in the investigation to develop some leads that pointed us in the direction of Yaya Robinson and then we were successful able to arrest him,” said Lt. Mark Johnstone.

Robinson was arrested while hiding in a closet in an apartment of a friend at the West Broadway Villas apartment complex later on Thursday. Police had to deploy a Taser to subdue him after he resisted arrest.  He is in the Sullivan County Jail without bail.

Robinson, who police said knew Burch, was charged with murder, criminal possession of a weapon, criminal trespass, resisting arrest, criminal contempt, and unlawful possession of marijuana.

Burch was found on the ground outside the apartments at 3:44 a.m. Thursday. He was transported to Catskill Regional Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

The Sullivan County District Attorney’s Office and Sheriff’s Office also assisted in the investigation.
