Sullivan County man gets life in prison for predatory sexual assault against a child

MONTICELLO – A Woodridge man may spend the rest of his life in state prison after his conviction in Sullivan County Court for predatory sexual assault against a child as a felony.

Joseph Kalina, 25, was convicted after a four-day jury trial in Sullivan County Court in April. The jury found Kalina had engaged in a course of sexual conduct against a child from November 2006 through February 2009 when the child was between the ages of eight and 11 years old and when Kalina was between 18 and 20 years of age.

He was arrested after an investigation by the Sullivan County Family Violence response team and the District Attorney’s Office.

“This defendant engaged in the worst kind of criminal conduct and in the process victimized a young child who will suffer with the scars of the trauma forever,” said DA James Farrell.

In addition to the prison term, the court imposed a permanent order of protection for the victim against Kalina.
