17 applicants meet filing deadline for casinos

ALBANY – Over half of the 17 casino proposals submitted by yesterday’s deadline are in the Catskill and Hudson Valley region, which is likely to get one or two of the four licenses to be awarded statewide.

Senator John Bonacic (R, Mt. Hope), chairman of the Senate Gaming Committee has “mixed feelings” because of the large numbers of applications in Orange County from developers with deep pockets.

“I would hope those disadvantaged counties would get a very high premium in the scoring and awarding of these casino licenses,” Bonacic said. “I am pleased that in Ulster and Sullivan those resort destinations are hanging in there and putting up their million dollars and going forward with their application.”

One intent of the enabling legislation is that casino resorts would primarily locate in areas in need of an economic boost.
