Another major casino contender drops bid

LIBERTY – Foxwoods Catskills Resort Casino has withdrawn from the running to build a casino resort in the Catskills-Hudson Valley region. The company had planned to build a large casino and entertainment complex at the old Grossinger’s Hotel site in Liberty.

Sullivan County Legislature Chairman Scott Samuelson was quite disappointed with the news, putting the blame on the late entrants from Orange County, which have placed those in his county at a disadvantage.

“The legislation was so clearly written for disadvantaged areas of the upstate region to revitalize tourism and economic development,” Samuelson said. “Everything that it says screams Sullivan and parts of Ulster, the Ellenville area, so it is pretty crazy that the big developers came in and have convinced the people of Orange County that they can get a casino. I just don’t believe that is the way it should go or will go.”

There are two casino proposals left in Sullivan County, both at the former Concord Hotel site – one by EPT/Empire Resorts and the other, Cappelli/Mohegan Sun.

Orange County Executive Steven Neuhaus said casinos in Orange County “can produce the most revenue and create the most jobs – the very purpose of the gaming law.”
