Mount Vernon man gets prison in deaths of two people in car

WHITE PLAINS – A Mount Vernon man was sentenced in Westchester County Court to two to four years in state prison in connection with a car crash in which two of his passengers were killed.

Kenyatta Garner, 37, of 616 Lincoln Avenue in Mount Vernon was convicted in January on two counts of criminally negligent homicide, two counts of assault, one count of speeding and a traffic infraction.

Garner was driving at a high rate of speed on the afternoon of July 8, 2012 when he rounded a curve on the southbound Saw Mill River Parkway. He crossed lanes and slammed into the rear of a car that was going in the same direction and then struck a concrete barrier and flipped over several times coming to rest 500 feet away from the impact point.

Two of the rear seat passengers in the car he was driving were ejected and died that day. Two other passengers were injured.

The car Garner was driving was later reported as having been taken from a Manhattan parking garage without the owner’s knowledge or consent. There were no connections between the owner and Garner or any of the passengers.
