Legislation would grant free sporting activity for disabled vets

ALBANY – State Assemblyman Peter Lopez (R, Schoharie) has introduced legislation that would grant all veterans with a disability one free week of sporting activity in New York State.

The measure would grant the free week to disabled veterans regardless of residency, exempting them from either acquiring a license or permit.

The idea came from last year’s Wounded Warrior Turkey Hunt in Catskill, sponsored by the National Catskills Longbeards Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation where members brought wounded veterans from across the United States to the Catskills Mountains for a one-day turkey hunt.

Events such as this one and others “provide a break from daily life and allow these veterans and their families to health and center themselves, allowing them to return to some sort of normalcy, and enable them to do something they may not be able to do otherwise without special arrangements,” said Lopez.
