Two possible drownings over Memorial Day weekend

ONEIDA/SULLIVAN COUNTIES – A man is missing in an Oneida County lake after a boat mishap on Monday.

Five individuals went for a boat ride at the Delta Lake State Park.  A 14-year-old male on the boat decided to go swimming but had trouble staying afloat. He was not wearing a personal floatation device.

William Cook, 32, of Camden  jumped from the boat in after him.  He was not wearing a personal floatation device.

Both males began to have trouble staying above water.

An unidentified male on another boat came to the rescue of the younger male, pulling him aboard.

Cook was unable to stay above water and subsequently went under.  As of late Monday, Cook was still missing.

A systematic search was conducted by the Oneida County Sheriff's Office, State Police Helicopter, New York State DEC, Westernville Fire Department, Lake Delta Fire Department, and the New York State Park Police.

A New Jersey man is presumed drowned after disappearing in the Delaware River Sunday afternoon, near Lumberland in Sullivan County.

Ukonne Uyobong, 22, of Jersey City, was rafting with two companions when he took off his life vest and jumped into a calm stretch of water near Hansome Eddy.  He disappeared in water still murky from recent rain.

The accident happened near a National Park Service office.  A rescue effort was quickly launched, but Uyobong could not be located.
The search will resume today.
