Bill would ban smoking at school bus stops

ALBANY – State Senator Cecelia Tkaczyk (D, 46) introduced legislation that would prohibit smoking at school bus stops while children are being picked up or discharged.

The bill would prohibit smoking within 15 feet of a designated school bus stop during the morning and afternoon hours when children are picked up and dropped off from school.

“This legislation will play a dual role in safeguarding the health of our children,” Tkaczyk said.  “Not only will it protect children from second hand smoke, but it may also help avoid taking up the cigarette habit themselves.”

She also noted that the American Academy of Pediatrics has found that second-hand smoke increases both the likelihood of smoking-related illnesses as they grow into adults.”
