Woman killed day before college graduation

PUTNAM VALLEY – A Poughkeepsie woman, who was to have graduated from Dominican College’s nursing program on Sunday, May 18, was killed in a one-car crash on Saturday morning.

Vaughna Jarvis, 23, was northbound on the Taconic State Parkway south of Peekskill Hollow Road in the Town of Putnam Valley at 7:50 a.m. when she attempted to change lanes after passing a vehicle. She lost control of her car, drove off the road and struck a ditch. The vehicle then rolled over and struck a tree before returning to the road, coming to rest facing south in the northbound lanes.

Jarvis was found unconscious at the crash scene and transported to Hudson Valley Hospital Center where she died of massive internal injuries.

State Police said said there was no indication that alcohol or illegal drug use was a factor in the collision.

The northbound lanes of the parkway at the crash scene were closed for two hours as troopers conducted the investigation. They were assisted by the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office and the Putnam Valley Fire Department.
