Weather blamed for fatal upstate boating accident

TOWN OF ELLERY - State Police in Jamestown investigated a fatal boating incident in Chautauqua Lake on Saturday, May 10.

Investigation revealed that at about 3:50 PM, two subjects were fishing approximately 200 yards off shore on Chautauqua Lake in the Town of Ellery in a 14 foot outboard motor boat. The weather conditions began to deteriorate, the boat which was anchored in the rear began to take on water and became unstable, high winds and rough waters caused the boat to capsize ejecting both occupants into the water.

Passing boaters observed the subjects, both wearing life vests, near the capsized boat and pulled them from the water and then turned them over to members of Bemus Point Rescue. Roy Barclay, 65, of Derrick City, Pennsylvania was taken to WCA Hospital where he was treated for exposure and released.

Robert Knell, 66, of Duke Center, Pennsylvania was unresponsive and transported to WCA Hospital where he was pronounced dead due to cardiac pulmonary arrest.

NYSP were assisted by the Chautauqua County Sheriff's Department Water rescue team who assisted in recovering the overturned boat.
