Guilty verdict in 2010 Lindenhurst homicide

RIVERHEAD - A Massapequa man was convicted of murder in the second degree for the 2010 shooting of Mandy Jo Jenkins of Lindenhurst.  The jury began deliberations late Tuesday and returned the verdict yesterday.

David Newbeck, 36, of Massapequa, shot Jenkins five times and wrapped her corpse in a tarp, dumping the body in Lindenhurst on August 23, 2010.  The remains were discovered 42 days later near Long Island Railroad tracks.

Two weeks after the discovery of the body, Newbeck was arrested in Texas as he was boarding a flight to Central America.

For his role in assisting Newbeck, the victim’s boyfriend, Joseph DeFelice, 35, who was also arrested on a fugitive warrant, in Palm Beach Florida a week after Jenkins’s body was found, was convicted of murder in the second degree, criminal facilitation, and hindering prosecution in the first degree last year. DeFelice is serving a 25 years-to-life sentence in the maximum security correctional facility in Auburn, New York.

Newbeck, also found guilty of hindering prosecution in the first degree, faces a minimum of 27 and one-third years’ to life in prison when he is sentenced on what would have been the victim’s 34th birthday, June 23.
