Congressman urges President to speed up new rules for crude oil by rail

WASHINGTON – Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney (D, NY18) asked President Obama to immediately release comprehensive rules for crude oil transport safety recommended last week by the US Department of Transportation.

Maloney’s call comes after a freight train transporting crude oil derailed in Lynchburg, Virginia.

He also called for the expedited replacement of DOT-111 rail tanker cars to prevent future accidents.

“As the amount of crude oil traveling through the Hudson Valley increase, so must our sense of urgency; 90 days is too long to release simple safety measures that will save lives and protect our environment,” Maloney said.
