National Guard members detain robber at motel

NEWBURGH – Two Air National Guard members are being credited with capturing a man who robbed the night clerk at a Town of Newburgh motel Saturday night.

Town Police allege Joseph Arbing, 58, of Boston, MA, approached the clerk in the Comfort Inn motel on Lakeside Road and demanded money. He did not display a weapon.

Police Officer William McLean was the first to arrive on the scene within seconds.

Arbing fled through the front doors at the same time as off-duty Air Guard Master Sgt. Antonio Latona, Jr. was in the lobby and gave chase as the suspect fled behind the motel.

Latona apprehended him and detained him with the assistance of another Air Guard member, Senior Airman Steven Curet, until Police Officer Laura Dunn arrived and placed him under arrest.

Arbing was charged with felony robbery.  The money was recovered.
