Fifty veterans make trip to WWII Memorial with help from airport firefighters who donate $5,100 to Honor Flight

ALBANY - Members of the Albany International Airport Fire Department today presented a check for $5,100 to the leaders of the Leatherstocking Honor Flight organization.  The contribution will be used to send World War II veterans to the World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C.

The Airport firefighters are members of Local I-65 of the International Association of Firefighters.  The check was presented by local president Steve Dorsey along with several members of the department.

Members of the Airport fire department conduct an annual Boot Drive for charitable organizations.  The most recent drive saw motorists drop $5,100 in the firefighters’ boots.

“Nationwide, there are over 16,000 World War II veterans waiting to travel to Washington to visit their memorial,” said Steve Dorsey, president of Local I-65 of the International Association of Firefighters.  “We hope that our contribution will recognize the sacrifices made by our local veterans and help make possible their journey to the World War II Memorial.”

Leatherstocking Honor Flight is a not-for-profit entity, created to honor America's WWII veterans for their service to their country. Leatherstocking Honor Flight is one of more than 100 established 'hubs' in the national Honor Flight Network.

Funding for each Honor Flight comes primarily from individuals across the country who recognize the great accomplishments and sacrifices of veterans and want them to experience their WWII Memorial. Other significant contributors have been fraternal organizations like local American Legion, VFW, Am Vets, DAV, posts and chapters, as well as various corporations on a local level.

Leatherstocking Honor Flight gratefully accepts donations from anyone except World War II Veterans who have not benefited from the experience of an Honor Flight Tour.
