Poll: Cuomo maintains huge lead; Astorino undaunted

ALBANY – Westchester County Executive Robert Astorino, the Republican challenger to Democrat Governor Andrew Cuomo, is not fazed by his weak showing in the polls.

In its latest poll released Tuesday, the Siena Research Institute of Siena College said Astorino is 30 points behind the governor.

But, Astorino said it is “early in the ball game” and he is undaunted by the numbers.

“Right now his lead in the polls is simply a matter of name ID, but his job approval rating has tumbled, it is down into the mid-40s, so people understand that he is the governor so they know who he name is, but he is not doing the job they thought he would,” Astorino said.

The Siena poll found that in April, 57 percent of those questioned rated Cuomo favorably, while 38 percent rated him unfavorably and six percent had no opinion or didn’t know.

Nine percent of those polled rated Cuomo’s job as excellent, while 36 percent said he is doing a good job, 36 percent said he is doing a fair job, and 18 percent said he is doing a poor job.
