Putnam human remains may be man missing since 2010

PATTERSON – Police believe human remains found in a wooded area off Maple Avenue in the Town of Patterson are that of a Patterson man who left his home in October 2010 and had not been heard from since.

Gabriel Lopez-Duarte, then 39, left his residence on a bicycle and when he was reported missing, a police investigation was launched which covered several jurisdictions and many leads, but his whereabouts remained unknown.

When the remains were discovered last Saturday morning, local residents called the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office, which determined the remains might be related to that missing person case being investigated by the State Police.

A search of the area by State Police K-9 units, forensic personnel and other law enforcement members led to the discovery of a bicycle and identification associated with Lopez-Duarte. Positive ID is pending DNA analysis.

The cause of death remains under investigation.

Anyone with information regarding the investigation is asked to call State Police at Brewster Bureau of Criminal Investigation at 845-279-8656.
