Two shot, one dead, in New Paltz

NEW PALTZ – Two people were shot early Sunday morning in New Paltz; one is dead.

Police on patrol spotted a disturbance in front of Murphy’s Bar around 2 a.m., investigated and found two people shot inside. Both were transported to a local hospital where one victim, Ryan Gray, 29, of Poughkeepsie, was pronounced dead.

Mayor Jason West said the police department is doing the best that it can in a village that has 24/7 street life with a lot of alcohol involvement.

“Short of having metal detectors everywhere you go, I think that crime is going to happen,” West said.  “We have a finely trained police force to prevent as much crime as possible and to follow up with investigations and prosecute the crimes that happen.  It’s just that it is a factor of life and it is the age of such readily available guns that it will be a more violent type of life.”

The investigation is continuing and police ask anyone with information about the incident to call the New Paltz Police Detective Division at 845-255-1323. All information will be kept confidential.

New Paltz Police were assisted by the State Police, Ulster County Sheriff’s office, SUNY New Paltz Police and the Ulster County District Attorney’s Office.
