Man with gun arrested on SUNY New Paltz campus

NEW PALTZ – A Brooklyn man, who was visiting his student girlfriend at SUNY New Paltz, was arrested in her dorm room Monday night while armed with a handgun.

Marquis Bernard, 19, was tracked down after he attended an off-campus party on Route 32 across the street from the college. He became involved in a fight with an off-campus student, left the party with his girlfriend and another man, and returned with the gun, which he pointed at the student. The victim told police Bernard pulled the trigger twice, but it misfired both times.

Bernard fled the scene and within minutes of the incident, college police located and arrested Bernard on charges of felony reckless endangerment and unlawful possession of a weapon on school grounds, and misdemeanor menacing.

Bernard and another Brooklyn man who denied knowledge of the gun or the incident and was not charged are now banned from campus.

“We have zero tolerance for illegal weapons on our campus and the suspect is going to be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law,” University Police Chief David Dugatkin said. “The safety of students, faculty and staff will always be our top concern.”

This is the first incident of a gun on campus since Dugatkin became police chief three years ago.

College police believe there is a second student victim in this case and asks anyone with information to call them at 845-257-2222. All tips or information will remain confidential.
