Schumer wants feds to look into spike in natural gas prices

WASHINGTON – With some natural gas prices rising as much as 60 percent during this past winter, US Senator Charles Schumer Wednesday called on the Federal Trade Commission to investigate to determine if there was any price gouging.

If the investigation does turn up suspicious circumstances, the senator would want the Justice Department to step in.

“If this is just part of natural causes, just the price of gas that went up on the national market and there was no manipulation there, so be it,” Schumer said. “But, many experts are worried that is not called. When get a 65 percent increase as many New Yorkers have, that’s too much.”

Schumer said it would be wise for New York to create a consumer advocate’s position to be a watchdog for issues like this.
