Driver charged with DWI following injury crash on SSP

MINEOLA - State Police received a radio call for a wrong way driver traveling west on the Southern State Parkway in the eastbound lanes at about a 4:25 Sunday morning. While the Troopers responded they were advised that the subject vehicle was involved in a head on collision on Southern State Parkway eastbound in the area of  Exit 20. The Troopers arrived on the scene and observed a two cars, both vehicles had front end damage. The operator and the passenger in one of the cars had injuries to their legs and face.  EMS personnel were summoned to the scene and both subjects were transported to Mercy Medical Center for medical treatment.  

The troopers interviewed the operator of the other vehicle, Bindo Acharya, 26, who was behaving in an erratic manner.  A very strong odor of alcohol was detected. The suspect refused a breath test.

Acharya was processed for driving while intoxicated (refusal), reckless driving, driving in the wrong direction on a one way street as well as other vehicles and traffic charges.
