MTA leader reaffirms safety-first goal of Metro-North

NEW YORK – The president of the MTA told the agency’s board on Wednesday that they are conducting a full re-evaluation of safety procedures and the safety culture of Metro-North Railroad.

Thomas Prendergast said they hired new Metro-North President Joseph Giulietti to address all of the issues facing the railroad.

“We didn’t hire Joe just to fix safety issues at Metro-North, we hired Joe to return Metro-North to its former status as one of the best railroads in the world because that’s what it was until very recently and make sure the safety culture has got it right,” Prendergast said. “Neither one of us is will be satisfied until it is at that point, and we are fully aligned with that.”

Giulietti was hired recently after the abrupt retirement of former Metro-North President Howard Permut.
