Rochester Optical to receive military contract worth up to $50 million

WASHINGTON - The Department of Defense will award a contract to Rochester Optical to produce optical frames for the military, worth up to $50 million.  Schumer said the frames will be made in Rochester, and support the company’s 160 local employees.  The contract is based on military needs over the course of the next three years, but the total value of the procurement cannot exceed $50 million.  Schumer explained that this was a significant contract for the company and, more generally, it advanced Rochester’s reputation as a leader in optics, both research and manufacturing.

“This military contract is great news for Rochester jobs and only furthers the area’s reputation as a leader in optic technology and manufacturing,” said Schumer.  “As home to some of the nation’s best research universities, and industry-leading companies like Rochester Optical and Baush + Lomb, Rochester has made optics research and manufacturing a regional asset that generates economic growth.”

Rochester Optical Manufacturing is an independently owned and operated manufacturer and wholesaler of high quality fashion and military eye wear and lenses. They employ roughly 200 employees including 160 workers at their Rochester facility after expanding their HQ in 2010 in the Lyell Avenue neighborhood.
