Surgeon sentenced to federal prison for healthcare fraud scheme

WHITE PLAINS – A Hopewell Junction orthopedic surgeon was sentenced Friday in White Plains federal court to 4 ½ years in prison for operating a long-running health care fraud scheme.

Dr. Syros Panos defrauded Medicare, the New York State Insurance Fund and several private health insurance providers out of over $2.5 million by systematically lying about the nature and scope of the surgical procedures he performed.  In addition to prison, Panos, 45, was ordered to forfeit $5 million.

Panos was part of a medical group with offices in Dutchess County who performed surgeries in Poughkeepsie hospitals.

From at least 2006 through July 2011, he maintained a high-volume orthopedic practice, which enabled him to carry out his fraud scheme on a large scale.  He performed thousands of surgical procedures, and often as many as 20 or more in a single day, for which he and the medical group submitted claims of over $35 million to health insurance providers. The medical group received over $13 million on those claims.

Panos provided false information to the insurance companies resulting in overpayments of at least $2.5 million.
