Funeral director arrested pre-paid funeral funds missing

AKRON - State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation at Clarence arrested Funeral Director Paris Childs of Childs Funeral Home located at 10 Eckerson Avenue in Akron, New York. 
 
Childs was charged with grand larceny in the 3rd degree.  His arrest was the result of an ongoing investigation involving the theft of funds received by Childs Funeral Home for the purpose of pre-paid or pre-need accounts. 
 
In New York State pursuant to General Business Law 453, all funds paid in advance for a funeral must be deposited in an investment backed by the United States Government, such as FDIC insured certificates of deposit or a New York State bank.  Account statements showing interest earned must be reported annually to the consumer, or within 30 days after a request.  The money shall be held in trust. 
   
Anyone having entered into a Pre-paid or Pre-need Agreement with Childs Funeral Home that has not received a Confirmation Statement or Annual Interest Statement is asked to contact the Bureau of Criminal Investigation at SP Clarence (716) 759-6831.
