Man killed while changing tire along highway

MAYFIELD - State Police in Mayfield investigated a fatal motor vehicle accident Thursday on State Route 30 in the Town of Mayfield.

At approximately 9:20 a.m.,  Darcy Lawton, 37, of Mayfield, was southbound on State Route 30 in the Town of Mayfield when the left front tire came off. She pulled off to the right shoulder of State Route 30 and contacted a friend for assistance.

Pearl Van Every and his brother Charles "John" Van Every of Mayfield arrived to assist in replacing the front tire. Shortly after the repair and as all three were still standing out on the roadway, a vehicle southbound on State Route 30 struck Lawton and Van Every. The vehicle was operated by an 84-year-old, Northville man.

Van Every, 64, was dead at the scene. Lawton was transported by helicopter to Albany Medical Center where she underwent surgery for non-life-threatening leg injuries.

The investigation into the incident is ongoing with the assistance of the New York State Police Accident Reconstruction Team who closed Route 30 yesterday for a period of time. No tickets or charges have been filed at this time and there is no indication of alcohol and/or drug involvement thus far in the preliminary stages of the investigation.
