Fugitive child rape suspect arrested

EAST GREENBUSH - State Police located and arrested a fugitive sex offender from Massachusetts early Wednesday morning at a motel in East Greenbush after being advised by Massachusetts State Police that the suspect may have fled Massachusetts to the Albany area.

On Sunday, February 9th, officers of the Southborough Massachusetts Police Department received a compliant of sexual assaults that had been occurring within the town of Southborough. Through the investigation it was determined that Robert Cerqua, 48, of Southborough, was the suspect involved in the sexual assaults. Shortly after midnight, a New York State Police surveillance team discovered Cerqua's vehicle at the rear of the Econo Lodge on RT 9 & RT 20 in East Greenbush. Cerqua was then located in a motel room and subsequently taken into custody without incident. He was transported to SP Schodack where he was charged as a fugitive from justice and processed. He was later arraigned in the Town of Schodack Court and sent to the Rensselaer County Jail without bail.
