Ulster County man sentenced to 25 years to life for killing two-year-old

KINGSTON – A man convicted of bludgeoning a two-year-old girl to death while she was visiting family in New Paltz was sentenced Monday to 25 years to life in state prison.

Joseph Rodriguez, 44, killed little Asia Perez, a citizen of the Dominican Republic, on June 20, 2012. She is the second person he was convicted of killing.

Ulster County Court Judge Donald Williams told Rodriguez when passing sentence that “no sentence that the law permits me to impose can address the devastation you have brought against Asia’s family.” The judge said he will “forever be haunted by the photographs of that beautiful two-year-old girl.”

This was not Rodriguez’s first brush with the law. He had been arrested 21 times, 17 of which were for felonies.

The judge noted that out of all of those crimes, Rodriguez had previously been convicted of the bludgeoning death of a Brox woman in 1992 and told him, “you have forfeited your right to live among the innocent.”

Many of the police officers who investigated the murder of Asia Perez as well as all 12 jurors who handed down the verdict last November, attended the sentencing.
