Five charged with $1.2 million in food stamp frauds

WHITE PLAINS – Authorities have arrested five people for allegedly participating in three separate conspiracies to exchange food stamps for cash at three stores in Yonkers.

According to a federal complaint, Ahmed Alsamet, 35, owner of Sam Deli Grocery Store in Yonkers and Shoiab Ahmed, 22, an employee of the store, are charged with conspiring to exchange over $250,000 in food stamp benefits for cash.  Yousif Kassim, 30, the owner of 42 Post Deli Grocery in Yonkers and Mufid Kassem, 36, an employee in that store, are charged with conspiring to exchange $200,000 in food stamp benefits for cash.  Gloria Garcia, 51, is charged with conspiring to exchange over $800,000 in food stamp benefits for cash at another store in Yonkers.

If convicted, each person faces up to five years in federal prison.
