Burglary suspect found dead, stolen weapons recovered

NORWICH – A man suspected of stealing several firearms two separate gun burglaries to Mayhood’s Sporting Goods on State Route 12 in Norwich, NY, was found dead in a wooded area. 

The two incidents occurred between 9:52 PM on Monday January 6, and 6:00 AM on Tuesday January 7. Numerous firearms were taken from the store including upwards of 22 hand guns, several long guns and numerous boxes of ammunition. A complete inventory of all stolen property is being completed at this time.
 
State Police began a search for the suspect, Christopher Gonzalez, 29, who is wanted for questioning in reference to these burglaries.   Police found Gonzalez dead on January 10. 

An autopsy, conducted on January 11, determined the cause of death to be from hypothermia, with a secondary contributing factor of drug toxicity. The manner of death was ruled accidental. 

State police located all of the 26 handguns and 6 long guns that were stolen from the Mayhood’s Sporting Goods.
