Fed lawmakers propose paid family and medical leave

PURCHASE – A group of are federal lawmakers on Friday announced legislation that would create paid family and medical leave.

The measure would create a national paid family and medical leave insurance program, which would financially assist them when caring for themselves or a family member.

Congressman Sean Patrick Maloney (D, NY18) said the bill would update the current law, which was passed over 20 years ago and provide for a continued paycheck.

“There is a woman named Nicole in Poughkeepsie who wrote into my office saying, ‘after I had my child I had to go back to work in just a couple of weeks because I was going to miss the mortgage payment,’ and the time is now for paid family leave and this bill is paid for. It would involve an employee contribution system that would not add to our deficit,” Carlucci said.

The measure also has the backing of House members Nita Lowey (D, NY17), Eliot Engel (D, NY16), Rosa DeLauro (D, CT) and US Senator Kirsten Gillibrand (D, NY).

The lawmakers announced their proposal at the offices of MasterCard in Purchase, NY.
