Delaware County couple, dog, dead after apparently falling through pond ice

ONEONTA - On December 31, 2013, State Police at Oneonta received a missing person report on Ira Landess, 74 and Nancy Klinger-Landess, 71 of 290 Quaker Hill Road, in the Town of Harpersfield.  Investigation revealed that both Mr. and Mrs. Landess were missing along with their German shepherd.

A search of the property by NYSP members revealed a large ice hole in a frozen pond on the couple’s property with a dog toy near the entrance of the hole.  Police scuba divers responded to the scene and initiated a search of the pond.  At approximately 11:30 pm, Mr. Landess’ body was recovered from the pond.  Mrs. Landess’ body was recovered on January 1, 2014 at approximately 1 pm along with the family dog.

A deputy medical examiner determined the deaths were due to accidental drowning – hypothermia.
