Homeless man indicted in Christmas Eve abduction, rape, murder

NEW CITY – A homeless man who lives in Spring Valley has been indicted by a Rockland County grand jury on six counts in connection with the murder of a woman last week.

Juan Perez-Coira, 43, allegedly kidnapped Deborah Burns, 55, who he knew, between December 24 and 26, raped and sodomized her and ultimately killed her.  It is alleged that Perez-Coira knew Burns from the Lakeview Village housing complex where both of their families lived.

Perez-Coira was indicted on three counts of murder, one count each of criminal sexual act, rape, and kidnapping.  If convicted of the top counts, he could face 25 years to life in prison.

District Attorney Thomas Zugibe called the attack on Burns “a particularly senseless crime,” and said “the degradation, humiliation and terror allegedly suffered by the victim at the hands of the defendant are truly disturbing.”
