Bank robbery in Putnam Lake

PUTNAM LAKE – Police are looking for a man who held up the Putnam County National Bank branch in Putnam Valley late Friday morning.

The Putnam County Sheriff’s Office said the man walked into the bank at 89 Haviland Drive around 11 a.m., announced a holdup and told two tellers inside to lie down on the floor. He then walked around the tellers’ counter and took an undisclosed amount of cash from the cash drawers before fleeing. An employee tripped an alarm and called police after the robber fled.

No weapon was displayed or threatened. No one was hurt during the incident.

The suspect was described as a white man in his 40s, about five feet, 11 inches tall, weighing about 180 pounds and having a medium build.

He was last seen wearing a gray army-style jacket over a gray hoodie-type sweatshirt, a brownish woolen watch cap and sunglasses with silver rims.

State Police and a State Police helicopter assisted sheriff’s detectives and investigators. Canine units from the sheriff’s office and MTA Police scoured the vicinity of the bank. The FBI was notified and is assisting in the investigation.

Anyone with information about the robbery is asked to call the sheriff’s office in confidence at 845-225-4300.
