Guilty plea in death of Hudson Valley motorcyclist

KINGSTON – A Poughkeepsie man pled guilty in Ulster County Court on Monday to first-degree vehicular manslaughter in connection with the death of a man on a motorcycle last May.

Francisco Vasquez-Cruz, 25, of 2 Roosevelt Avenue in Poughkeepsie, was arrested by Town of Lloyd Police after his SUV collided head-on into a motorcycle driven by Fernando Diaz, Jr., 41 of Newburgh, killing him.

“Mr. Cruz was traveling home from an evening where he had been drinking in Newburgh. He didn’t have his headlights on; it was 10:30 at night on May 2, 2013, and drifted into the oncoming lane and killed an individual on a motorcycle,” said District Attorney Holley Carnright said.

When they took Vasquez-Cruz’s blood, it was .25 percent, “an exceptionally high intoxication rate,” the DA said.

Vasquez-Cruz was northbound Route 9W at around 10:30 p.m. when the crash occurred.

He is expected to be sentenced in February.
