Ice blamed for fatal crash in Herkimer County crash

TOWN OF OHIO - A vehicle driven by Nancy Herrick, 78, of Remsen, was westbound on Rt365 between the intersections of Korber and Mapledale roads. Herrick lost control of the vehicle on the ice and slush covered highway and entered the opposing lane of travel colliding with a eastbound vehicle head on. The east bound vehicle was driven by David Eaton, 60 of the Town of Ohio, Herkimer County.

Herrick was treated at the scene by members of the Barneveld and Holland Patent Fire Departments an transported to St Elizabeth's Hospital by Prospect Ambulance. Herrick was then transferred to Upstate Medical Center with multiple injuries. A passenger in the Herrick vehicle, Joan F Hamlin, 75 also of Remsen, was dead at the scene. Both women were extricated from the vehicle by fire personnel utilizing the Jaws of Life.

Eaton was treated at the scene for minor injuries and declined medical transport. The highway was closed for over five hours as Deputies re-constructed the accident.

New York State Police also assisted at the scene and the accident remains under investigation
