Governor calls on MTA to implement new safety precautions ASAP

ALBANY – New York Governor Andrew Cuomo wrote to MTA Chairman Thomas Prendergast on Friday telling him that the MTA “should expedite automated speed control for vulnerable track locations” on the Metro-North and Long Island Rail Road systems, including those where there is a significant speed change.

Cuomo said positive train control “offers the most comprehensive systemic solution to prevent railroad collisions and speed conditions that can lead to derailments.”

He also asked Prendergast to confer with relevant personnel and experts to identify what actions could be taken before positive train control is installed, and design recommendations to address hazards found following the December 1 fatal derailment.
