MTA payroll tax will stand, court says

ALBANY – The MTA payroll tax on businesses within its territory will stand as the State Court of Appeals Thursday declined to hear an appeal from affected counties.

Nassau County led a lawsuit against the MTA that included Orange County, several of its municipalities and chamber of commerce. They believe the tax is a jobs killer.

The 34-cent per $100 of payroll is levied on large businesses in the MTA region, which includes Westchester, Rockland, Putnam, Dutchess and Orange counties along with the five boroughs of New York, Nassau and Suffolk counties on Long Island.
