Father charged with battering infant

ALEXANDRIA BAY – Police have charged the father of a two-month-old infant with inflicting severe injuries, including multiple fractures.  State Police in Alexandria Bay arrested Willie Smith III, 26, of 22625 Plaza Dr. Watertown, NY for one count each of assault 2nd and endangering the welfare of a child.

An investigation was started with a Child Protective Services hotline referral of an injured 2 month old male infant.  The infant was taken to Samaritan Medical Center (SMC) where he was diagnosed with two fractured arms, two fractured legs, fractured ribs and several fractures of the skull.  The injuries were determined to be in various stages of healing and that some could be life threatening.  The infant was transferred from SMC to Upstate Medical Center that evening.  The investigation revealed that on one evening in the month of May the infant’s father, W. D. Smith III, punched the infant in the head with a closed fist.

Smith was arraigned in the Town of Theresa court and is in the Jefferson County Public Safety Building in lieu of $10,000 cash or $20,000 bond.
