US Airways promises upstate airports will not suffer from merger

WASHINGTON – US Airways CEO Douglas Parker has given Senator Charles Schumer a commitment to retain New York regional service and preserve jobs at its regional airports including Westchester County in White Plains and Stewart Airport at Newburgh, when the airline merges with American Airlines. The new combined carrier will fly under the American Airlines name.

“The merger between US Airways and American should only be cleared for take-off if we are sure it will not mean higher airfares, less service, or a reduction in New York jobs,” Schumer said. The commitment by the US Airways CEO “demonstrates the company’s strong commitment to Upstate New York air-routes and jobs.”

From Westchester County Airport, American Airlines currently flies to Chicago and US Airways flies to Charlotte, Philadelphia and Washington, DC.

From Stewart Airport, US Airways flies to Philadelphia. Several years ago, American Airlines flew to Chicago, but pulled the service.
