Central Hudson victim of cyber-security attack

POUGHKEEPSIE – Customers of Central Hudson Gas and Electric are being notified that the utility’s computer system was hacked by a cyber-security attack over the President’s Weekend holiday and that their private banking information may have been accessed.

Customers are being notified by phone call, email and US mail.

“Out of an abundance of caution, we are recommending that all customers monitor their credit reports and bank accounts in order to detect any unauthorized activity,” said Central Hudson President James Laurito. He said there is no evidence at this point that the information was downloaded or misused.

Company employees uncovered the incident as a result of successful control procedures.

If customers suspect any incidence of unauthorized access to their personal account or credit, they should call their local law enforcement agency, Central Hudson officials said. If they notice irregular activity in their checking or savings accounts in particular, they should contact their bank immediately.

Laurito said customers likely have limited liability for unauthorized banking transactions. “If you report the transaction within 48 hours, your liability is limited to $50 in many cases,” he said.
